I'm curious why this would be, as it's a separate system, but I'm wondering if the broadcast channels are still MPEG-2 or if everything is on HEVC MPEG-4 and if the coded has something to do with the increase. I have been complaining to Shaw since September 28'th about this problem to no avail so far. Telus uses MPEG-4/H.264. Shaw uses both MPEG-2/H.262 (16Mbps for HD channels) and MPEG-4/H.264 (7-8Mbps for HD channels). All of Shaw's SD channels, and most HD channels are mpeg2. Newer ones (anything launched in the last few years) plus sunday ticket & center ice are mpeg4. I'm thinking the difference you see is mpeg2 vs mpeg4.
